Laser Hair Removal: What to Expect and Who It’s For
Published on May 21, 2025
How laser hair removal works
Laser hair removal works by using concentrated beams of light to safely target the roots of your hair, specifically the pigment (melanin) found in each follicle. When the laser energy is absorbed by the melanin, it heats up the follicle just enough to damage it—without harming the surrounding skin. This damage prevents the follicle from producing new hair.
However, not all hair is in the same stage of growth at the same time. Hair grows in cycles, and laser treatments are most effective during the “anagen” phase, when the hair is actively growing and still connected to the follicle. That’s why multiple sessions—usually spaced 4–6 weeks apart—are needed. Each visit catches a different group of hairs in that ideal phase, gradually reducing growth.
At Synergy Face + Body, we use the Sciton BBL (BroadBand Light) system, a next-generation technology that’s even more advanced than traditional laser hair removal. Unlike some older devices that can feel harsh or work only on certain skin tones, the Sciton BBL delivers customized broad-spectrum light with built-in cooling.
This means:
-
Treatments are gentler on the skin
-
Sessions are often quicker than traditional laser devices
-
It’s safe and effective for a wide range of skin tones and hair types when handled by a licensed provider
Whether you’re targeting your legs, underarms, face, or bikini area, our system is designed to give you maximum results with minimal discomfort—all under the care of experienced, highly trained professionals.

Is laser hair removal permanent?
Laser hair removal offers long-lasting results, and for many people, the treated hair doesn’t grow back. However, it’s best to think of it as permanent hair reduction, not complete removal. Some hair may regrow over time—especially due to hormones—but it’s usually much finer, lighter, and less noticeable.
Most patients enjoy smooth, hair-free skin for years, and an occasional touch-up once or twice a year is often enough to maintain your results.
Is LHR painful?
Most patients experience some discomfort during laser hair removal treatment, however it’s tolerable in the majority of cases. The amount of discomfort experience will depend on the individual pain threshold of the patient as well as the area being treated. A topical anesthetic can be applied prior to treatment in order to make the experience more comfortable. There will also be some redness and swelling after the treatment but this will subside within a few hours.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Most patients see optimal results after 6 to 8 sessions, spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart. Factors like skin tone, hair color, hormonal conditions (such as PCOS), and the area being treated can affect how many treatments are needed. Thicker, darker hair typically responds faster.
What areas can be treated?
Laser hair removal is safe and effective for nearly any part of the body. Common treatment areas include:
• Face (lip, chin, cheeks, sideburns)
• Underarms
• Legs (partial or full)
• Bikini line or Brazilian
• Chest and back
• Arms and shoulders
• Abdomen, neck, toes, and more
We offer laser hair removal for both women and men, including beard shaping and full-body treatments.
Is Laser Hair Removal Safe for Dark Skin?
Yes—with the right device and skilled provider. The Sciton BBL system we use allows for safe and effective treatment across a wide range of Fitzpatrick skin types, including darker tones. During your consultation, we’ll assess your skin and hair type to customize the treatment for the best and safest results.
Is there anything I need to do to prepare for treatment?
There isn’t much you need to do in order to prepare for laser treatment. Simply make sure that you’re wearing clothes that allow for easy access to the area being treated. Also you should shave the area being treated 24 hours prior to your treatment session.
What Is the Aftercare Like?
After your treatment, you might notice mild redness or swelling, similar to a light sunburn. This usually subsides within a few hours. To support healing:
-
Apply a cool compress or aloe vera gel
-
Avoid hot showers, workouts, and saunas for 24 hours
-
Wear SPF 30+ daily on treated areas exposed to the sun
-
Don’t wax, pluck, or pick at shedding hairs—this is normal
