Regardless of your age or body type, submental fullness is something that affects millions of people and is renowned for being one of the hardest things to combat. Although having a good diet and exercising regularly can sometimes help to naturally reduce submental fullness, some people are genetically inclined to have excess fat underneath their chin making it virtually impossible to reduce.
Kybella was developed to break down the fat cells under the chin that cause submental fullness leaving you with a much more defined jaw line and less fatty tissue under the chin.
During our Ask Anna series, we have received several questions about Kybella and have decided to answer the most frequently asked in this article.
What is Kybella?
Kybella is an FDA approved treatment used to combat submental fullness (also known as a double chin).
How does Kybella work?
The main ingredient present in Kybella is synthetic version of deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a natural molecule found in the body that is responsible for the breakdown of fat cells. When injected into the fatty tissue underneath the chin, the molecule destroys the fat cells. This causes a reduction in submental fullness and creates a slimmer and more defined jawline.
What are the benefits of having Kybella?
There are several benefits of having Kybella treatments. Some of these include:
- Improved appearance
- More defined jawline
- Permanent results
- Less invasive than other submental fullness treatments
- Only 2 – 4 treatments are needed to see results
Am I a good candidate?
If you are over the age of 18 and struggle with submental fullness, it’s likely that you’ll be a good candidate for the Kybella treatment. During your consultation, you will be asked to discuss elements of your medical history with one of our doctors so they can determine whether or not it is safe for you to go ahead with the procedure.
Kybella isn’t recommended for pregnant and nursing women and women that are planning to become pregnant soon because, the research into the effects of Kybella on foetuses and breast feeding babies is still being carried out.
What are the possible side effects of having a Kybella treatment?
Kybella is a non-surgical alternative to other surgical procedures such as liposuction. Although the treatment is much less invasive than other methods and relatively pain free, some side effects may be experienced after treatment.
The main side effects include things such as swelling, redness, bruising and tenderness on and surrounding the injection site. In most cases, these side effects subside within the days following treatments and most people don’t need time to recover.
