How Long Does Facial Filler Last?

– Filler longevity depends on the product type and where it’s placed, as areas with more movement, like lips, tend to break filler down faster.
– Hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvéderm, Restylane, and Belotero typically last about 6 to 18 months, with some cheek and jaw options lasting up to 24 months.
– Calcium hydroxylapatite fillers, such as Radiesse, generally last 12 to 18 months and stimulate collagen production.
– Poly-L-lactic acid fillers like Sculptra are used to treat deeper wrinkles, stimulate collagen production, and can last 2 years or longer.
– Longevity also varies by treatment area, with lips around 6 to 12 months, under-eyes around 8 to 12 months, cheeks and midface around 12 to 24 months, folds around the mouth around 6 to 18 months, and temples around 12 to 18 months

Signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles, often start to appear in the third decade of a person’s life and can have a negative impact on self-confidence.

If any of these signs of aging are starting to negatively impact your self-esteem, having facial fillers is something you might want to consider.

Fillers are used to reverse these signs of aging. They are injected in the areas of the face that are beginning to hollow and are used to fill out crevices, fine lines, and wrinkles.

How Long Each Type of Filler Lasts

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in soft tissues in the body. Once injected, HA fillers provide structure for soft tissues that have lost elasticity or volume due to age. This gives the appearance of plumped-up and youthful skin.

HA Fillers (e.g., Juvéderm®, Restylane®, Belotero®)last ~6–18 months (some cheek/jaw formulations up to 24 months). Reversible with hyaluronidase.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA)

Another substance found within the body is calcium hydroxylapatite. CaHA fillers are known to stimulate the production of collagen and are typically used to treat deep wrinkles.

CaHA Fillers (Radiesse®)last ~12–18 months; also stimulates collagen.

Poly-L-lactic Acid (PLLA)

Poly-L-lactic acid is a manmade synthetic substance that can be safely injected into the body. This type of filler tends to be used to treat deep wrinkles and similar to CaHA fillers, it has been proven to stimulate the body’s production of collagen.

PLLA Fillers (Sculptra®) last 2+ years.

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)

Polymethylmethacrylate fillers take the form of microscopic spheres that are suspended in purified collagen gel. These microspheres provide structure and support to areas of soft tissue that have lost volume.

The results from this type of filler are semi-permanent, this is because the mixture is made up of 80% purified collagen gel and 20% PMMA microspheres, as the collagen gel dissolves the PMMA produces new natural collagen to fill the space under the skin, keeping the fine lines and wrinkles at bay.

PMMA fillers (Bellafill®)last multiple years; considered semi-permanent.

How Long Do Fillers Last in Different Areas?

Movement and anatomy matter. Areas that move more (like lips) typically break filler down faster.

  • Lips: ~6–12 months
  • Under-eyes (tear troughs): ~8–12 months
  • Cheeks / Midface: ~12–24 months
  • Nasolabial folds & marionette lines: ~6–18 months
  • Chin & Jawline: ~12 months
  • Temples: ~12–18 months
  • 1.

What Affects Filler Duration?

  • Filler formula & cross-linking: Thicker, more cross-linked gels generally last longer.

  • Placement & depth: Correct plane and product selection = better durability.

  • Treatment area motion: More movement (lips) = faster metabolism.

  • Your biology: Metabolism, age, skin quality, and lifestyle (sun, smoking).

  • Dose & plan: Under-correcting may fade sooner; structured plans maintain results.

  • Injector skill: Technique and anatomical precision strongly influence outcome and wear.
