Reflexology is a non-intrusive complementary health therapy. By using different points on the body, including the feet, lower legs, hands, face or ears, a reflexologist can work holistically with their clients to promote better health and alleviate pain.
As an age old technique to help induce an overall feeling of well-being, reflexology offers a drug free approach to self care. Because this type of therapy is not chemical based and is non-intrusive, reflexology can be received by virtually anybody. There are, however, some instances where reflexology may not be suitable, during pregnancy for example, but our highly skilled reflexologists will be able to advise you on this.
How Does Reflexology Work?
There are actually several theories about how reflexology works to help improve your overall well being and to minimize certain symptoms. Research undertaken in the 1890s by Sir Henry Head and Sir Charles Sherrington, showed a neurological relationship exists between the skin and the internal organs, and that the whole nervous system adjusts certain types of stimulus.
According to this theory, applying pressure to feet, hands, or ears sends a calming message from the peripheral nerves to the central nervous system, which in turn signals the body to adjust the tension level. This can enhances overall relaxation, meaning your internal organs are able to function at their optimum capacity.
Another theory is that reflexology helps to reduce pain by reducing stress and improving your mood. This in turn, can influence the brain to lower the amount of pain you are feeling.
One final theory is that reflexology keeps the body’s “vital energy” flowing. If stress is not addressed, it can lead to congestion of energy, which in turn causes inefficiencies within your body, which can lead to illness. According to this theory, reflexology helps keep the energy flowing.
How Can A Reflexologist Help Me?
Your reflexologist will focus on the entire pattern of the therapy, to provide you with an entirely holistic course of treatment. Starting at the toes and working down the foot, many different techniques will be used throughout the session. By working all of the various points, the reflexologist will address your internal organs and glands as well as muscle groups, bones, nerve ganglions and nerves to help relieve pain and promote wellbeing.
Specific conditions can be treated using previously defined pressure points that correspond to certain areas of the body. But generally, your reflexologist will work all areas of the foot to release congestion from the nerve pathways to promote relaxation throughout your entire body.
