Ask an Aesthetician: How to Transition from Summer to Fall Skincare
The weather’s getting colder and the sweaters are coming out! If your skin is like the cool fall air and another thing on the list that is becoming drier, we’ve got you. We asked our licensed Medical Aestheticians for their top tips and tricks for a smooth transition between the seasons.
First things first, it’s time to focus on adding some moisture back into your skin. When the weather starts to change, our skin does too. Especially as we begin to see cooler temperatures, our skin starts to feel more dry. You can restore hydration loss by adding in products with hydrating and soothing ingredients like hyaluronic acids, peptides and ceramides.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance produced by the body that is found in our eyes, joints and skin. It helps to lubricate our tissues and is a key ingredient for drawing in and retaining moisture on the skin. Peptides, sometimes called polypeptides, are also naturally occurring. They consist of amino acids that help to build up important proteins (like collagen!). When applied topically, they are a soothing and luxurious option for restoring the skin barrier, plumping the skin and reducing inflammation.
Nuvia C. is a medical aesthetician at our Cary location and loves the combination of our Skin by Synergy™ Moisture Rich Renewal Cream and Polypeptide Gel. “Paired together they give skin intense hydration and moisture, improves texture and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles,” she said.
Nuvia’s other pro-tip? “Add an AHA/BHA exfoliating cleanser a couple of times a week,” and you’ll be on your way to smoother, firmer, brighter looking skin.
Other favorites include SkinMedica’s HA5 and Phyto-C’s Superheal™ O-live Gel. Emily T, Synergy’s lead aesthetician at our Inside the Beltline location, always encourages applying HA products with wet hands. “This will help the moisture stay on the skin long after application,” she said.
Another crucial transitional skin tip is to not skimp out on the SPF! Just because you’re not out sitting by the pool or on the beach, it’s just as important to protect yourself from the sun during the cooler months. Medical Aesthetician and Laser Specialist Kaylyn R. loves Revision Skincare’s Intellishade because it keeps the skin hydrated but still provides protection.
Lastly, take advantage of having some downtime. Get a peel or laser treatment to correct some of the damage you acquired during summer before the holidays! Now is the time to amp back up your retinols or skin brightening products.
