How to Prepare for a Microneedling Treatment

If you are experiencing dull and sagging skin, then microneedling may be the option for you to achieve a bright, more youthful complexion. While microneedling can improve the appearance of your skin, it can only do so if and when you prepare for your treatment the right way. It’s not as simple as coming in for your appointment and having the treatment performed. Men and women who undergo microneedling treatments will be given a pre-treatment plan to ensure that all steps are followed before embarking on their skin rejuvenating journey.

What Can I Expect?

First off, during your consultation at Synergy Face + Body, you will be examined by our skin care professionals to evaluate your skin condition and determine whether or not microneedling is the best choice for your skin and your goals. Ideal candidates for microneedling are men and women in good health who wish to minimize the appearance of wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, and acne scars while also minimizing their pore size.

Once it has been decided that you are, in fact, a candidate for microneedling, your appointment will be scheduled. Prior to your appointment, there are a few things you need to do to prepare. Following the right pre-treatment instructions ensures that your microneedling treatment will go smoothly, and it helps to minimize any potential side effects.

Microneedling cannot be performed on anyone who has an active skin infection or breakout like cold sores, hives, allergic reactions, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, or active acne. You will need to reschedule your appointment if any of these infections arise the day of (or around) your appointment. Blood-thinning medication may need to be stopped, temporarily, for one to three days before your appointment. Direct sun exposure should be avoided for at least 24 hours, and patients should stop using skin care products like retinoids and acid-based products as these may cause skin irritation and dryness during treatment.

The Day of Treatment

On the day of your appointment, your skin will be cleaned so that there is no lotion, oil, makeup, or sunscreen residue during the actual treatment. Patients can expect their in-office microneedling session to last about 90 minutes. It is normal to experience redness and itching for a day or two after treatment, but these effects will dissipate over time. Moisturizing after your treatment is essential as it will accelerate your skin’s natural cellular turnover. The end result will be glowing, fresh, and rejuvenated skin. A good skin care routine, a healthy diet, exercise, and hydration, and repeat treatments are all beneficial in maintaining your results.

What Does Microneedling Treat?
