Questions to ask yourself before receiving breast implants in Raleigh
As with all elective surgeries, it is very important to think about all aspects of the preparation, procedure, and recovery carefully.
Here are some key questions to ask yourself when determining if breast implants are right for you.
Why do I want to have breast implants?
Are you looking to enhance your appearance and give yourself a little more self-esteem, or do you want your life to change?
If your answer is the latter, you might be setting yourself up for disappointment.
Are you looking to enhance your appearance and give yourself a little more self-esteem? Breast implants have helped our patients enhance their looks and feel more confident.
It is important that you discuss your goals with your surgeon, and setting realistic expectations will help you get the most out of your breast implants in Raleigh.
If you are self-conscious of the way your chest looks in clothes, or you think you are disproportionate, breast implants are an amazing way to balance out your frame and help your clothes look and feel better.
Am I a good candidate for breast implant surgery?
Thanks to our years of experience providing breast implants in Raleigh, we have helped patients from all walks of life achieve their ideal shape.
We find that the best candidates for breast implants are very healthy adults with fully developed breasts, whose bodies can handle the surgery and recovery period.
Any surgical procedure will be riskier for patients who smoke. Ideal candidates for breast implants, then, are non-smokers, or must be willing to quit for at least one month before and one month after the surgery.
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should wait until they are finished breastfeeding before coming to Synergy for breast implants in Raleigh.
What size would I like to be?
You likely have an image of the perfect size breasts for your body in mind, but it can be difficult to translate this from your mind to your surgeon.
We suggest doing plenty of research, including studying before + after pictures.
This may help you find photos you like, along with breasts you think are too big, too small, or do not match your desired shape. This will help your surgeon get on the same page with your own goals and desires.
Think carefully about your lifestyle and body type to determine what cup size best suits you.
You want to look natural, without anyone guessing that your breasts have been enhanced. Additionally, some athletes or exercise enthusiasts find that oversized breast implants get in the way of their activities.
The best plastic surgeons use state-of-the-art 3D imaging technology, like VECTRA 3D imaging at Synergy, to help you visualize the look of different shapes and sizes of implants.
This gives you the ability to see how you will look post-surgery and determine exactly what the best option is for you.
Do I have concerns about the perkiness of my breasts?
If the size and shape isn’t the only concern you have about your breasts, there may be other procedures that can be paired with breast augmentation to help achieve your ideal figure.
Here’s everything you need to know about breast augmentation →
Many patients pair breast implants in Raleigh with breast lifts to solve the problem of “saggy” breasts or ones that are no longer as perky as they used to be.
Is my surgeon well-qualified?
Breast implants in the hands of a less-than-qualified or inexperienced doctor can lead to disastrous results.
It is important to do adequate research and receive multiple consultations from surgeons in your area. Ask friends, family, and coworkers for recommendations, too.
Additionally, you should make sure you seek this procedure from a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon who can readily provide you with numerous before and after photos, patient testimonials, and breast implant options.
How to prepare for breast implants in Raleigh
As with other medical procedures and surgeries you may have had, there are certain steps required to properly prepare patients for breast implant surgery.
Pre-Blood Work + Testing
Blood screening is required in order to determine that you are healthy enough to undergo the procedure.
We ensure that your electrolytes, hemoglobin, blood clotting abilities, and more are all at healthy levels.
Patients seeking breast implants who are over the age of 50 may be required to undergo an electrocardiogram (EKG) to ensure their heart is well functioning.
2-4 Weeks Before Surgery
- Refrain from smoking for at least 4 weeks
- Avoid alcohol, which inhibits the healing process and drink plenty of water instead
- Do not take blood-thinning medications like ibuprofen, Advil, aspirin, or Motrin
- Avoid herbal supplements that thin blood and interfere with anesthesia (e.g. St. John’s Wort, ginkgo biloba, green tea extract, ginseng, and garlic)
- Make arrangements for a ride home from the hospital
- Arrange for a caretaker for at least 24 hours after surgery
- Arrange for pet or child care, if necessary
The Night Before Surgery
- Bathe & wash yourself with antibacterial soap
- Stop eating or drinking (including sips of water) at least 8 hours before surgery
- Get a good night’s sleep
Our process for inserting breast implants in Raleigh
On the day of surgery, it is important that you arrive in loose clothing, preferably with a shirt that buttons or zips up.
Nurses will help you into a gown, get an IV started, and help get you ready to receive your breast implants in Raleigh.
Here’s what to expect after you are prepped for surgery:
Anesthesia
Your surgeon and anesthesiologist will determine whether intravenous sedation, general anesthesia, or a combination of the two, will work best for you.
You will then be comfortably put to sleep before your implants are inserted.
Incision
There are several options for incisions when receiving breast implants. These options will be presented in full detail during your initial consultation.
Currently, there are three options available for breast implant incisions: inframammary, periareolar, and transaxillary.
Inframammary incisions, also called “crease incisions,” are the most common breast implant incision.
The surgeon creates an opening in the inframammary fold beneath the breast to insert the implant through. Since most breast sizes will conceal this crease, this approach will almost entirely conceal the appearance of any scarring.
Periareolar incisions are an approach that places the surgical incision in a semicircle on the lower half of the nipple.
There are also options for areolar incision that involves an incision around the entire nipple.
Because the nipple is usually darker and more textured than the rest of the breast, this is also a good option for concealing any scarring.
A transaxillary incision may be a good option for patients who have not had any prior surgical breast procedures, are not having a breast lift, and prefer saline implants.
This approach involves creating a small opening in the armpit and forming a pocket in the chest wall for each implant. The surgeon then fills the implant with saline to your desired size after it has been placed.
Insertion + Placing
After the incision is created, your surgeon will position the implant in your breast, either beneath your chest muscle or between the muscle and breast tissue.
The type of implant, degree of enhancement, and your body type will help you and your surgeon determine which implant placement is best for you.
Closing Incision
The incisions are closed up with layered sutures in your breast tissue and then with additional sutures or adhesive to close the skin.
Patients who are concerned with scarring can take some measures to have a better quality and less noticeable scar by refraining from smoking before & after surgery, avoiding alcohol while the wound is healing, eating a diet with plenty of protein to sustain the skin’s building blocks while healing, adequately hydrate, and following post-op instructions very carefully.
Enjoy The Results
Most breast implant surgeries take less than an hour, and you can go home the same day once you’ve recovered from the anesthesia – with a ride from a friend or family member, of course.
Though you will be bandaged and required to wear a surgical bra, you will notice the change in size right away.
In the following weeks and months as the swelling subsides and the skin stretches, however, you will begin to see the final results of the procedure.
Your breasts will “drop” as the muscles relax around the new implant and the skin will soften into a natural shape and texture.
Your surgeon may recommend that you wear a bandeau for a period of time to help shape your breasts, especially if the reason for your surgery was to fix asymmetry or very undersized breasts.
Will my breast implants look the same for life?
Breast implants are not considered to be lifetime devices. Additionally, changes in weight, hormonal factors, aging, and gravity will have effects on your breasts and breast implants over time.
It is important to schedule annual visits with your plastic surgeon to evaluate the health of your breasts and to ensure the integrity of your breast implant is not declining.
If and when it’s time to replace your implants, typically after about 7-10 years, you do not have to stick to the same type, size, and shape you had before.
New implants can also be paired with breast lifts to enhance your figure and help your breasts look more youthful.
